Texas grape is grown almost exclusively for its genetics, not its fruit — its unusual tolerance of alkaline, lime-rich soil made it the essential parent, crossed with V. riparia and V. rupestris, behind the SO4, 5BB, 1103 Paulsen and 110 Richter rootstocks that let the world's Vitis vinifera vineyards be replanted on phylloxera-proof roots after the Great French Wine Blight. ⚠ Know the look-alike: across eastern and central North America, moonseed (Menispermum canadense) twines alongside wild grapes, carries similar dark hanging clusters, and is potentially fatal. Three checks — a grape has 2–4 rounded, pear-shaped seeds while moonseed has ONE flat crescent seed; a grape climbs by forked tendrils and moonseed has none; a grape's leaves are toothed and moonseed's are not. Open a berry and look at the seed before eating any wild grape.

Growing guide
Fertilizing. Naturally adapted to alkaline, calcium-rich limestone soils with high pH (7.5–8.5) and low available iron — the trait that gives its hybrid rootstocks their prized resistance to lime-induced chlorosis; needs little amendment beyond good drainage.
How it spreads. Tendril-climbing vine to about 10 m, growing over shrubs and trees on rocky slopes; its extensive root system also helps stabilize erosion-prone limestone hillsides in its native range.
Growing tips. Valued specifically for phylloxera resistance and lime (calcareous soil) tolerance rather than for fruit or table use; fruit is small and clustered with a rich but sometimes slightly bitter flavor, sweetening only when fully ripe. Prune only in winter dormancy, since cuts made when sap is rising bleed heavily.
