Lives up to its name: 150 to 1,200 bristles per square inch on the canes, among the prickliest brambles going. More a wetland-margin plant than the drier thickets most Rubus here favour.

- A perennial crown and shallow spreading root system in the top 30–40 cm, carrying biennial canes: each cane grows one year, fruits the next, then dies. New shoots come from buds on both the crown and the roots, which is why a bramble returns from root fragments left after digging and why it is so hard to remove once settled.
- Fruit description
- Black aggregate berry roughly 1–1.5 cm, ripening midsummer on bristly canes — sweet-tart and pleasant but small and seedy, and produced sparingly compared with a cultivated blackberry. Worth foraging, not worth planting for a crop.
- Propagation
- Tip layering is the natural method for the trailing kinds: bury a cane tip in late summer and sever it once rooted. Erect kinds sucker freely and a rooted sucker can simply be lifted. Root cuttings in winter also work. Seed needs a long cold stratification and is slow.
- Pollination
- Self-fertile and bee-pollinated, and facultatively apomictic — much of the seed is produced without fertilisation, so seedlings often come near-true to the parent. That apomixis is why this group is described as hundreds of near-identical microspecies rather than a handful of variable ones.
