Best planted in early spring after your last frost, or in fall before the ground freezes, depending on your climate.

The wild Himalayan pear — a small to medium montane tree with a rounded crown, valued in its native range both as a wild-harvested food and, increasingly, as breeding and rootstock material for cultivated pear. Its small, russet-apple-like fruit is astringent when unripe but sweetens with bletting.

Ovate to narrowly ovate, rarely elliptic, 4–8 cm long by 2–5 cm wide, margin finely to obtusely serrate, emerging with a slight reddish tint before turning glossy deep green and then orange-red in autumn.
Root system
Not specifically documented beyond general pear rooting habit; tolerates chalk, clay, loam and sand but performs best in deep, fertile, well-drained, near-neutral soil.
Fruit description
Small pear-like fruit, 1–4 cm across and 2–5 cm tall, resembling a russet apple in appearance — light green when immature, turning blackish-brown with numerous small yellow-white dots (lenticels) at maturity. Astringent and hard when first picked but sweet once fully ripe or bletted (dried fruit is noted as particularly flavorful); roughly 6.8% sugars and about 1.2 mg vitamin C per 100 g.
Propagation
Propagated by seed in autumn for rootstock and species conservation, or by grafting/chip-budding named or superior selections — as with other pears, seed-grown trees are variable and don't come true, so grafting is used to fix desirable fruiting types. It is itself used as a rootstock for cultivated pear in parts of its range.

How it spreads. A single-trunked, non-suckering tree.

Growing tips. Reaches maturity slowly, over roughly 20–50 years. Prefers deep, fertile, moist but well-drained, near-neutral soil in full sun and does not thrive on very acid or shallow chalky soils or with more than half-day shade. It is susceptible to the same suite of pear diseases as cultivated pear — fireblight, pear scab, European pear rust, blossom wilt and brown rot — and to common pear pests (aphids, codling moth, pear midge, pear blister mite). Fruit generally needs bletting (softening after harvest) before it's palatable — a mature tree can yield around 45 kg of fruit a year, and the dried fruit is noted as particularly good.
