Korean pine is the pine nut of everyday commerce — the main species behind the pine nuts sold internationally out of China, Russia and North Korea (together over 60% of the global supply), wild-collected from natural stands and largely processed for export in northeastern China.

Leaf shape
Needles in fascicles of five, 7–15 cm long.
Root system
A deep taproot from the first year, later joined by wide laterals near the surface — the combination that lets these pines hold rocky, droughty ground where little else will. The taproot is also why container-grown plants must go out young: a spiralled root never recovers.
Fruit description
Cones are large, 9–14 cm long (rarely to 20 cm) and 6–8 cm across, and stay closed on the tree — nutcrackers and rodents do the work of extracting the large, reddish-brown, thick-shelled, wingless seeds.
Propagation
By seed, which has deep morphophysiological dormancy — commercial nurseries typically use about 6 months (up to 9–12 months) of cold stratification, sometimes preceded by 60 days of warm stratification, for good germination; grafted seedlings bring named or high-yielding selections into cone production much sooner than seedlings do.

Growing guide

Fertilizing. Prefers well-drained, mildly acid to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0) and tolerates nutritionally poor ground; established trees rarely need feeding beyond an occasional light spring dose for young plantings.

Growing tips. A large, long-lived tree (30–50 m tall, occasionally to 700+ years old) that is notoriously slow to bear in the wild — 50 to 80 years for first cones — though cultivated trees can start after about 20 years and grafted trees within just a few. Watch for tip blight, needle scale and sawflies; as an Asian white pine it carries only partial resistance to white pine blister rust (around 20% infection in Korean field trials versus 40%+ for the fully susceptible North American eastern white pine).

Companion planting. As a five-needle (white) pine it can host white pine blister rust; avoid planting near Ribes (currant/gooseberry) species, the fungus's obligatory alternate host, especially where the rust is already established.
