Chilgoza pine produces the largest pine nut of any commercial species — thin-shelled kernels 17–23 mm long — prized across Afghanistan, Pakistan and northwest India, but wild populations are now IUCN-listed Near Threatened after decades of unsustainable cone harvesting that leaves too few seeds for natural regeneration.

Leaf shape
Needles in fascicles of three, stiff and spreading, 6–10 cm long, glossy green above with blue-green stomatal bands beneath.
Root system
A deep taproot from the first year, later joined by wide laterals near the surface — the combination that lets these pines hold rocky, droughty ground where little else will. The taproot is also why container-grown plants must go out young: a spiralled root never recovers.
Fruit description
Cones are large, 10–18 cm long and 9–11 cm wide when open, with wrinkled, reflexed scales. Seeds are unusually large for a pine nut — 17–23 mm long, 5–7 mm wide — with a thin shell that cracks easily and a rudimentary wing.
Propagation
By seed, though the hard, impermeable seed coat gives poor natural germination (20–40%); nursery protocols use about 60 days of cold stratification near 4°C, sometimes combined with mechanical scarification and gibberellic acid soaking, to lift germination to 50–70%.

Fertilizing. Grows naturally on lean, dry, sunny mountain slopes and needs no routine feeding; good drainage and full sun matter far more than soil fertility.

Growing tips. A slow-growing tree to 15–25 m with a deep, wide, open crown. Overharvesting of cones for the nut trade has collapsed natural regeneration across much of its range — a genuine conservation concern, not just a cultivation footnote. Suited to dry, sunny, rocky sites, and cold-hardy given its high-elevation native range.
