Best planted in early spring after your last frost, or in fall before the ground freezes, depending on your climate.

Japanese flowering crabapple is grown almost entirely for its exceptional spring display — crimson buds opening to fragrant white or pale pink blossom on gracefully arching branches — and is agriculturally significant well beyond ornament: its Vf scab-resistance gene, taken from a single accession, underlies a large share of the scab-resistant apple cultivars bred over the past century.

Native to Japan and East Asia; it is thought to be of hybrid origin itself, likely M. toringo (siebold ii) × M. baccata rather than a straightforward wild species, and its exact natural range is consequently not sharply defined.

Leaf shape
Narrow, slender ovate leaves 4-8 cm long, dark green, serrate, sometimes slightly lobed at the base, carried on arching branches; fall color has been reported as red and yellow.

Fruit description
Small, red-to-yellow fruit up to about 1 cm in diameter, ripening in autumn — acidic but pleasant-tasting, described as similar to a large blackcurrant, and typical of ornamental crabapples in being far too tart and small for fresh eating as a dessert apple.
Propagation
Grown from seed sown as soon as ripe in autumn in a cold frame, typically germinating in late winter — stored seed needs about three months of cold stratification at 1°C. Because it is itself of hybrid origin, seedlings can vary, so the widely grown ornamental form is often propagated by grafting or by mature-wood cuttings taken in November.

Growing guide

Fertilizing. Succeeds in most fertile soils — sandy, loamy, or clay — and tolerates mildly acidic through basic pH; grows best in moisture-retentive, well-drained loam without special feeding needs.

How it spreads. Forms a round-headed single tree without significant root suckering; self-seeds via bird-dispersed fruit but seedlings do not come true given its hybrid ancestry.

Growing tips. Shows good resistance to apple scab and powdery mildew, and is one of the single most important disease-resistance sources in modern apple breeding — the Vf gene for scab resistance, isolated from M. floribunda accession 821, has been bred into numerous scab-resistant apple cultivars through programs such as the PRI (Purdue-Rutgers-Illinois) breeding effort, and M. floribunda is also a documented source of fire blight resistance QTLs. As with the rest of the genus it remains susceptible to honey fungus. Widely regarded as one of the best ornamental crabapples for flower and form, earning the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
