Leaf shape
Narrow, alternate, lanceolate leaves 1–8 cm long and up to about 1 cm wide. New growth is covered in silvery scales; the upper leaf surface darkens to grey-green through the season while the underside stays persistently silvery.
Root system
An extensive, fibrous and strongly suckering root system, with taproots recorded to about 4 m deep and lateral roots spreading up to 10 m — the fibrous mat helps bind loose sand and soil. Roots carry nitrogen-fixing nodules formed in symbiosis with the actinobacterium Frankia.
Fruit description
Round to oval berries about 6–8 mm across, weighing roughly 270–480 mg each, borne in dense clusters pressed tightly along the branches; color ranges from pale yellow through bright orange to dark orange. Raw fruit is very sour and astringent — most people find it unpalatable fresh — but it mellows after a frost or cooking. The pulp and seed together yield up to about 9.2% oil (seeds alone about 12–13%), and the fruit is exceptionally high in vitamin C, up to roughly 400 mg per 100 g.
Propagation
Propagated from seed (cold-stratify about 3 months, or sow ripe seed in fall), from half-ripe cuttings taken June–July, from hardwood cuttings taken in late autumn and rooted with bottom heat, or by lifting and replanting root suckers in winter — suckers establish especially fast. Because the species is dioecious and seedlings are unsexed until flowering, named fruiting cultivars are propagated vegetatively (cuttings or suckers) to guarantee sex and fruit quality.
Pollination
Wind-pollinated, with male flowers offering little nectar or pollen reward for insects. Commercial orchards commonly plant one male for every 6–8 females (some low-density plantings use ratios as wide as 1:60+), and a male shrub can shed viable pollen effectively over roughly 10–40 m, with some reports of pollination occurring up to 300 m downwind.

Growing guide

Fertilizing. Roots form nodules with the nitrogen-fixing actinobacterium Frankia, and an established stand can fix on the order of 180 kg of nitrogen per hectare per year — this is why the shrub thrives on nutritionally poor, sandy, saline or eroded soils with little or no supplemental feeding. Heavy nitrogen fertilizer is generally unnecessary and can even suppress nodulation; light, well-drained soil at pH 6.5–7.5 with added organic matter is the main recommendation for orchard plantings.

How it spreads. Spreads vigorously by root suckers, forming extensive clonal colonies from underground root sprouts — a trait exploited deliberately for erosion control, dune stabilization and land reclamation on eroded slopes and coastal sands across Europe and Asia. The same vigor has made it a documented problem outside its native range: introduced to Canada in 1938 for ornamental and shelterbelt use, it has since spread by suckering and by bird-dispersed seed into prairie and floodplain habitats and is now flagged as invasive there, and its tendency to form dense thickets by suckering is also noted as limiting its usefulness in some shelterbelt plantings.

Growing tips. Exceptionally cold-hardy — reported to withstand roughly −25°C to −43°C, with fully dormant plants tolerating down to about −50°C in mid-winter (USDA zones 3–7/8 depending on source). Needs full sun; seedlings and mature plants both fail to fruit or grow well in shade. Highly tolerant of wind, salt spray and drought once established, which is why it is widely planted along coasts and highways. Reported pests include the aphid Capitophorus hippophaes, fruit flies, gypsy moth and scale insects; diseases include Verticillium and Fusarium wilts, stem canker and dieback, and there are currently no pesticides specifically registered for the crop.
