Spring sap tapped for syrup — the classic North American sap birch; under 1% sugar, but the sweetest of the birches here. A large volume of sap is needed per litre of syrup.

- Leaf shape
- Ovate, 5–10cm long, with a doubly serrated margin and up to 9 pairs of lateral veins. Best known for its bright white, papery bark that peels in horizontal strips to reveal orange-brown inner bark — historically used by Native American and First Nations peoples for canoes, baskets, and storage containers.

- Fruit description
- Cylindrical, drooping seed catkins that disintegrate at maturity into tiny winged nutlets about 1.5mm long by 0.8mm wide; separate slender male catkins overwinter and elongate in spring.
- Propagation
- By seed — cuttings are difficult in this genus. Stratify seed at about 4°C (40°F) for roughly 90 days; seed needs light to germinate, so sow on the surface and give at least 8 hours of light daily.

Growing guide
Fertilizing. Adapts to poor, sandy, or nutritionally thin soils, though it grows best on well-drained sandy loams. No special feeding regime is documented — avoid over-fertilizing, which promotes soft growth more attractive to borers.
How it spreads. A classic, prolific pioneer coloniser of burned or logged ground; produces around 2.5 million seeds/ha in average years (up to roughly 86 million/ha in mast years), wind-dispersed and self-seeding freely onto bare mineral soil.
Growing tips. Fast growth when young (often 20cm of trunk diameter within 30 years), then slowing markedly with age; generally shorter-lived than yellow birch. Shade-intolerant — needs full sun and cool, moist conditions, and struggles on hot, exposed, or drought-prone sites. Bronze birch borer and birch leafminer are the two most serious pest problems, especially once trees are heat- or drought-stressed. Its wide, shallow root system (most roots in the top 60cm, no taproot) makes it prone to drought stress and wind-throw. Tap in late winter/early spring on the same warm-day/freezing-night cycle as maple; sap sugar is only about 0.9%, so roughly 80–100+ L of sap is needed per litre of syrup.
Companion planting. In a 20-year Ohio common-garden trial, paper birch proved considerably more resistant to bronze birch borer than the European B. pendula and B. pubescens — but it can still be infested if grown alongside stressed birches of any species.
