A dryland-adapted serviceberry of the Intermountain West and desert Southwest, ranging from Washington and Montana south to Baja California and Texas on dry, rocky slopes — its deep, spreading root system makes it noticeably more drought-tolerant once established than its eastern North American and European relatives.

- Small pomes about 6-10 mm (1/4-3/8 in) across, reddish-brown to purplish-black, borne in tight clusters; at its best, sweet with an apple-like flavor and hints of grape and almond, though quality varies and fruit can be bland or dry in poorer conditions — often dried and used as a raisin substitute.

Seed should be harvested green and sown immediately, or given warm stratification followed by cold winter exposure if stored; germination is notoriously slow — laboratory trials found only about 1% germination after 30 days of cold stratification, rising to roughly 95% by 150 days. Growth from seed is slow overall — Utah field trials measured seedlings reaching only about 76 cm (30 in) tall by year nine.

Growing guide
Fertilizing. Adapted to lean, coarse-to-medium, well-drained soils with a pH of 6.5-7.5; it is not salt tolerant and does not need or benefit from rich fertilization or supplemental moisture once established — overly fertile, wet, or humid conditions can encourage rust and fire blight rather than helping growth.
How it spreads. A many-branched shrub with a deep, spreading root system that can sprout vigorously from the root crown after fire, browsing, or dieback, gradually forming clumps or loose colonies over time — a less aggressive, less stoloniferous mode of spread than the running habit of A. stolonifera.
Growing tips. The most drought-tolerant of the four species here — native to dry, open, rocky slopes in the Intermountain West and Great Basin that receive only about 15-21 inches (38-53 cm) of annual precipitation, with a deep, spreading root system that gives strong drought resilience once established. Full sun. As with other Amelanchier it is susceptible to cedar-apple/orange rust — notably common at lower elevations on fine-textured soils and north-facing slopes — and to fire blight. It is fire-tolerant and resprouts readily from the root crown, but is slow-growing, especially from seed.
Companion planting. Rosaceae host for cedar-apple/hawthorn rust (Gymnosporangium spp.), which needs both a Rosaceae host and a Juniperus (juniper/eastern red cedar) host to complete its life cycle. Spores can travel over a mile, so distance alone won't fully prevent it — resistant cultivars are the more reliable control, but avoiding nearby junipers helps.
