The classic wild serviceberry of European mountains, found from Spain to the Caucasus and North Africa on rocky, often limestone slopes — a slow-growing, sun-loving shrub valued in gardens chiefly for its abundant white spring blossom rather than for its fruit, which is edible but noticeably drier and blander than that of the North American species.

- Native to the mountains of central and southern Europe — from Germany and France south to Spain, east through the Balkans, Ukraine and Greece — into western Asia (Turkey, the Caucasus, south to Lebanon, Jordan and Israel) and North Africa (Morocco, Algeria). It is the classic wild serviceberry of European rocky slopes and stony woods, typically on limestone.

- Roundish-oval leaves, white and woolly when young before becoming hairless and dark green; leaves mature to grey-green and turn orange, red, and yellow in autumn.
- Root system
- Shallow, fibrous and suckering — the plant spreads into a multi-stemmed thicket by root shoots. That habit is how it is usually propagated, and the reason a single plant becomes a colony unless the suckers are removed.
- Fruit description
- Round berries about the size of a blackcurrant, ripening from red to bluish-black under a purplish bloom; edible but dry and mild rather than sweet, generally considered better for preserves than fresh eating.
- Propagation
- Seed should be harvested green and sown immediately, or given about 4 weeks of warm stratification followed by cold winter exposure if stored — untreated stored seed can take 18 months or longer to germinate. Also propagated by layering (about 18 months to root) or by dividing rooted suckers once they have grown for 2 years. Because it hybridizes freely with other Amelanchier species, named selections are often grafted onto A. lamarckii or Sorbus aucuparia seedlings rather than raised from seed.

- Hybridizes readily with other Amelanchier species growing nearby, so seed-collected plants may not come true to type — named selections are typically propagated by grafting or vegetative methods rather than from seed.

Growing guide
Fertilizing. Adapted to poor, rocky, often calcareous soils in the wild, so it does not need or want rich fertilization; it is fairly lime-tolerant and does well from mildly acid through alkaline soils. Grows in sandy, loamy or clay soils provided drainage is good — avoid waterlogging and overly rich, moisture-retentive beds.
How it spreads. A slow-growing, upright/erect shrub that stays comparatively compact; it can produce some root suckers suitable for division after about 2 years' growth, but it is not an aggressive colonizer like A. stolonifera.
Growing tips. Needs full sun — it cannot grow in shade — and is hardy to about -20°C. As with other Rosaceae in the genus, it is susceptible to fire blight and to Amelanchier/cedar-related rust fungi. It hybridizes readily with other Amelanchier species growing nearby, so seedlings may not come true to type. The fruit is edible but comparatively dry and mild — described in older sources as "not very palatable" fresh, better suited to preserves than to eating out of hand.
Companion planting. Rosaceae host for cedar-apple/hawthorn rust (Gymnosporangium spp.), which needs both a Rosaceae host and a Juniperus (juniper/eastern red cedar) host to complete its life cycle. Spores can travel over a mile, so distance alone won't fully prevent it — resistant cultivars are the more reliable control, but avoiding nearby junipers helps.
